The mounting structure is a small share of a rooftop solar system's cost but carries the whole array for 25 years. Here is what decides its price per kW.
Roof type
- RCC flat roofs need tilted structures with columns and anchoring — more steel per kW.
- Metal / tin-shed roofs use short rails fixed to the sheet — the least steel per kW.
- Elevated structures that leave usable space underneath use the most steel.
Material and coating
Pre-galvanised steel is economical for many rooftop systems. Hot-dip galvanised (HDG) steel, galvanised after fabrication, has a thicker coating and costs more, but is preferred for harsh sites and is often required in tenders. Aluminium is light but costs more.
Wind zone and height
Structures are designed for the site's basic wind speed. Higher wind zones, taller buildings and elevated structures need heavier sections and more bracing.
Order size and layout
Repeating table layouts across many sites — as in PM Surya Ghar programmes — reduce cost per kW compared with one-off custom layouts.
